Good landscape designers focus on three main points to be successful:

listening skills that help them really understand their clients needs and wishes,

making every design specific to its site, reflecting its topography, climate, soils and streetscape

communicating their design solutions in plans, sections and perspectives so clients can easily imagine their new garden

Food For Hort

As you drive around your home town how many edible plants can you see in people’s gardens? Not many I’m sure - maybe a solitary lemon tree, mango or olive. Think how much more interesting and versatile our gardens would be if we incorporated food plants into the design.

As a student you always carry that little bit of hope that something special will happen, not only to propel you into the real world, but something that gives you the chance to look back on all your hard work and know why you pushed yourself. AILDM Student Design Competion 2006 - Donna Laing

Last year’s AILDM student competition saw many outstanding entries. In previous issues of Landscape Outlook we have shown you the plans of our first and second prizewinners, Tamsin Edwards Francis and Mark Hill.

Winning third prize in this competition is an outstanding achievement considering the extremely high standard of entries. Donna Laing was a Certificate student from the Blue Mountains campus of the Western Sydney Institute of TAFE who was given special permission to enter, as usually the student must be studying for a Diploma as a minimum. Donna’s teacher saw the talent in her student and put forward a good case for her – and the result certainly supports her confidence.

AILDM Student Design Competition 2006

During 2006, AILDM ran its second national design competition. Attracting nearly 80 entries from 4 states and both TAFEs and universities, the standard of the entries was very high, showing the great skills developing in our landscape design student population. Prizes included a trip to Singapore to work with Jim Fogarty on his display garden for the Singapore Garden Festival, two $500 book vouchers and 6 other merit awards.

Tamsin Edwards-Francis of Brisbane North Institute of TAFE Queensland, (Grovely Campus) won first prize

OTHER MAJOR PRIZEWINNERS WERE:

Student Design Winners 2005

Congratulations to Wendy Carroll and Victoria McCallum the winner and runner up of the 2005 AILDM Student Awards. Their brief: to design a garden 12×15m for a family of four. The design had to include an outdoor dining area, water feature and at least one large tree in a north facing garden. Here are their designs.

An enthusiastic crowd gathered at Pavilion on the Park restaurant in Sydney’s Domain to celebrate the second annual AILDM Design Awards. It was a great evening with mouth watering food and time to catch up with friends and colleagues. Against the backdrop of an eye catching display by new AILDM sponsor Colourwise Nursery the winners received their trophies designed by talented Sydney-based sculptor and designer Roger Apte.
